The proponents of social justice are throwing a party tonight. Why you may ask? Because UCLA will have more black students next year! Woo Hoo!

You might remember that last year I brought up this very important issue right here on The Blarg. I’m glad to report that my efforts have been successful, and UCLA is more black this year. You might think intelligence or academics would be a more important basis for evaluating a person than their skin color, but you’re wrong! The color of a person’s skin far outways anything like personal responsibility or hardwork.

Unfortunately our job is not done. It is my goal to make sure that by 2015 every single student at UCLA will be black. There are some who might cry foul at such a suggestion, but those people are evil and mean (and probably asian and white). No black person would ever want to be judged by the content of their character, but only by the color of their skin. This was of course Martin Luther King Jr.’s motto.

Please join me in this uphill battle of making sure that everyone at UCLA is black, and that the discrimination of considering things like talent and skill are done away with. No person should have to be judged because of who they are as a person, but solely by the color of their skin. Together, we can make a difference.

I’m Still Here…

Comments off

I’m still here…and still not very inspired. I’ve spent all weekend working on lesson plans and grading tests. On top of that I have beginning teacher "work" I have to do. It’s like doing college work, but even worse because you’re already done with college, and you’ve got people telling you that "NOOOO, you’re not done you idiot!!!"

I still don’t know what I want for Christmas…how about $600 to build a home theatre pc? my media player ran for 12 hours straight last night, so I have some renewed faith in the little box. I like books, so those always work. Hardcover only please.

I’m watching what the Dodgers do this off-season…so far there has been good and bad, but I’ve got faith in Ned. We’ve got more starting pitching than anybody in all of baseball.

Good to see UCLA beat USC…though I really don’t care. UCLA was one of my "maybe" schools back in High School, so I’ve got more love for UCLA than USC for that minor reason.

I miss Zelda. :(

Finally I Pissed Someone Off!

Someone got mad at me for my post about affirmative action and UCLA. They posted it on their myspace. Feel free to give them a beatdown if you’d like, I already started.

Time for some controversy!

I get the feeling that the media and institutions of higher education don’t value or perceive the history of "white" people in the same way that they do other cultures. Diversity courses in college are never about people with light skin colors (instead only about how light skin people have harmed dark skin people). It’s almost as if we’ve been here so long that our history doesn’t matter, or even exist.

Not only do I think our past is brushed off as unimportant, but also our culture. Just because we don’t make empanadas, wear headresses, or speak other languages doesn’t mean we lack culture. It only means the media and higher education doesn’t care about our culture.

Before you label me a racist (because after all, saying something positive about "white" people makes you a racist), ask yourself this question: For what purpose are we forced to appreciate "diversity" in schools? Why not put a greater emphasis on the individual and their character traits that really matter. I am much more concerned with work ethic, moral standards, the family unit, and personal responsibility than whether or not you are a minority that eats "ethnic food."

I am not arguing that "white" people are better than anyone else (and if that’s all you’ve gathered so far you’ve missed the point entirely). It’s just as ignorant to lump all white people in a group as it is to lump all brown people in a group. Talk about the hot water you would be in for putting all brown people into the same group and assuming they have the same culture and history!

But you can do that with "white" people. We don’t have a history anyways!

Update: EDSE 435: United States Secondary Schools: Intercultural Education

Update II: A final clarification as my original post might have been a little muddled. I believe there is a double standard. Someone can put "Brown Pride" across their rear window and they are labeled "proud." If I put a "White Pride" sticker up I’m an anti-semite. It’s this sentiment that fueled the original post (much of which was tongue in cheek if you didn’t notice).

I would prefer the whole appreciating and valuing of people based on their skin color STOP completely. A piece on the news the other night was up in arms about the low number of black students at UCLA. Because it was about blacks it means you are "concerned about race relations." If someone complained about the number of white students in any context they’d be labeled a white supremacist (again, a reinforcing that it’s wrong to value "whites’).

Let’s start appreciating qualities that deal with character, something that actually matters.

A new local crisis is threatening to burst onto the national headlines. Only 96 black students have been accepted for the incoming class of freshmen this year at UCLA. *gasp* The horror! I know it’s shocking, and it would be easier to turn a blind eye to such a tragedy in the making, but I think you owe it to yourself to keep reading.

You should be outraged that only 2% of the incoming freshmen have black skin! Only 2%! You might be wondering, well what is an appropriate percentage? Actually, that is a stupid question. Asking that question is ridiculous, and the only proper action is to bitch and whine that blacks are underrepresented! Nevermind that Asians/Filipinos will make up 41% of the incoming class. There is no way Asians worked hard to achieve that goal. It would be a total waste of time to applaud them for that achievement. Instead you should be running around like a crazy person yelling "only two percent!?! Ahhhhhh!!!!"

There are obvious reasons of course for this 2% fiasco. Black people only live in the ghetto, and everyone knows that the only thing happening in the ghetto is drugs and sex and killing each other. Nobody does homework in the ghetto! You can’t, it’s impossible. No one can overcome anything these days. Obviously the only one to blame in the ghetto is the sucky teachers and the evil people that made the ghetto, well, ghettoey (I bet they were white).

The 96 blacks going to UCLA shouldn’t be applauded for their achievements. Instead we should only be raising hell for the missing percent of nameless black people that will not be attending UCLA this fall.

My wife is gone at Girl Scout Camp. I chose to stay home and keep the puppy company (she’s almost 3 years old, but she will forever be a puppy, weird). As this monumental weekend of aloneness approached, I began to brainstorm different activities I could partake in without the wife. While she loves to do things with me, there are certain things that would be lower on her list, yet high on mine. These are the types of activities I have focused on for today.

Last night I went over to Chris Luna’s new pad and hung out. We watched Ferris Bueller, random SNL dvds, and played Karaoke Revolution (cool game!). I ate Little Ceasar’s pizza and KFC chicken, mmmm.

Today I have decided to embark on a Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Marathon. The running time of all three extended editions is 11 hours and 22 minutes (not including disc changes). My original idea was to watch all 3 films including extras, but that might be a little long. It is now 11 am, and if I start soon, that has me finishing about 11:00 pm tonight, not including bathroom breaks and eating. There are easily 2 hours of extras per film, so those might have to wait. Here is a rough schedule of my day:

11:30 am – 3:00 pm : Fellowship of the Ring
3:00 pm – 7:00 pm : Two Towers
7:00 pm – 11:00 pm : Return of the King

UCLA plays Memphis at 4:05 pm, so I may switch to that for the duration of that game. I watched the game on Thursday against Gonzaga, and it was amazing. While I didn’t attend UCLA, I did look into going there in High School…so it’s behind CSULA and CSULB for schools I actually care about.

If you want to watch a LOTR film or watch UCLA in HD, you know where I’ll be.
