the US is basically stuck in a mistake on this one, pushing and supporting an idea that in the 40's we didn't realize would cause decades of death. i think we tend to still think in the big power mindset and don't value the effect a locally based idealist guerrilla type warfare can hold.

maybe it is time to just admit or mistaken policy and let Israel either go it alone, or propose some rollbacks. sorry jews, our first suggestion didn't work, how about trying greenland or something. we can keep most of the serious holy sites under neutral control and allow the pilgrimages and tourists and such.

fat chance it will happen though. jewish sentiment and political power in this country will make it tough, plus our military basically sees Israel as an allied military base in the mideast that can do things we can't do, like bomb iranian nuclear reactors.

we continue to pay a huge price to be the worlds police force, and gain very little if anything. while i empathize with their and many others plight, i don't believe tax dollars should be used.

and cory, the Egyptians were basically bought by us into not caring, so yes they will not care as long as the checks and benefits keep coming, sorta like the iraqi insurgents we bought.

I dunno, I think everyone should just watch "You Don't Mess With The Zohan" at least that part where both sides are in the street ripping on each other. Also the "Oooh Puppies!" scene. :)

You can go all the way back to the late 40's when Israel was created and debate whether that should have happened or not, but it's really a moot point now. Israel exists, and as a Democratic state I think it makes sense for the US to ally with them. Not to mention that Palestine is currently ruled by the Hamas party, a terrorist group, and I think it's easy to pick who our friends and enemies are.

Some argue that Israel in effect took the Palestinians land, and it's all their fault...but it's not so black and white. The land was given to them through the United Nations, not to mention it's not like the Arabs that are there were there first to begin with. Rome held the area at one point...but that doesn't mean they have a right to it either. But that's what makes this an imperfect world. Few countries are inhabited by the original people that found/settled it.

So to make my answer short: I think we should support democracies that believe in freedom, and that's Israel, not Hamas. And thanks for phrasing the question/comment very clearly. :)

No snarkiness, no sarcasm, just genuine interest in your opinion: why do we support Israel? Why them? Do you think other countries or religions have a right to zionist principles?

Again, not looking for a huge debate. Not pro palestine whatsoever. I just want to know your thoughts on Israel.

And when the Israeli PM explains this to reporters, the media dismisses it. "The violence needs to stop." No kidding! Israel has decided the same thing!
