For whatever reason we have Monday off, so hallelujah for that.

The hard drive in my HTPC died tonight. It was during the Dodger game, and I’m sure the death of the hard drive and the Dodger loss were related. For all the geeks, it froze, I rebooted, and could never get into windows again. Chkdsk kept freezing (a good 12 times) trying to startup, and even gave me an “unknown error has occured.” Tried to repair vista, but when it tried it said it can’t (because of a bad disk). I took the drive out and put it in my external usb drive on the upstairs computer, and even that is terrible. It showed me the contents of the HTPC drive for a minute, but then I started to get all kinds of errors trying to access it. Not sure why it went down, but I think it could be because of heat, so I’ll take a few steps to deal with that. It could be a completely random thing too, so who knows. Luckily it’s still under warranty, so the new one should be here soon. Only sucky part is I have to set it back up. I never got around to making a norton ghost image of it for precisely this situation. Oh well.

bummer… I’ve been in the habit of making a ghost image of all my windows machines after getting them to the *sweet spot* and I’ve used the restore feature quite a few times, can’t recommend it enough.

Oh well the second time installing will be better because you have things better nailed down and will not install a bunch of test junk!

Exactly. My codecs should be perfectly installed this time. But I don’t know how we’ll manage watching tv old school style for the next week.

Have you seen the Apple vs. Mac commercial where the yoga instructor is complaining about Vista? I don’t fully understand what Vista even is, but I think the commercial is hilarious.

heat is really not an issue for hard drives; just think of all those dell computers sitting inside desk cabinets, inlets clogged with dog hair and dust, quietly churning away.

if you can still access the drive, and have data on it you want to recover, ‘R Studio’ is the tool of choice. if it can be recovered, it can do it. you may just have master file table problems.

and if you haven’t sent it back yet, you should run the manufacturers hard drive test on it, grab it from their web site. it will tell you if the drive is bad, ie it is the drive’s fault and not an OS writing error. sometimes if you send a drive back that passes validation, you don’t get a warranty exchange, just your disk back.

I ran the western digital utilities, and it found bad sectors, but failed to repair them. Then it said to contact WD, so I’m pretty sure it’s fubared. I’m trying out r-studio though…very cool program. Recovering a few shows as we speak! Thanks CT.
