Tonight we learned all about breast feeding! It was actually pretty interesting. So far I haven’t been too into the whole reading and learning aspect of being pregnant, I think mainly because there is a ton of info out there that I don’t need to know. But how breast feeding works and the benefits seem very real and useful to me, so I was interested. Tomorrow we start the birthing type classes, so we’ll see how that goes.

Over the weekend our big goal was to ascertain baby furniture, and we succeeded! Unfortunately it won’t be here for 10-12 weeks, haha. The baby will be in a basinet for a couple months though, so everything should work out. We also met and interviewed a daycare lady on Friday, and it looks like the baby will be set in the Fall!

Something I’ve been researching for months is a high-def camcorder, and I’m pretty much set on which one I want. I’d been watching the Canon HV20 for a while, but they just announced a new version (HV30) which has a few notable improvements. For the techno geeks, it has a newer LCD, and it also has a 30p mode. I hate working with interlaced footage, and being able to film 30p out of the box should be a nice improvement over the 24p of the HV20 (not to mention the HV30 has 24p also). My only concern is that it won’t be out until February (or Amazon is saying March 1st) and that is cutting it a little close. Hopefully I can get one right away and start learning the ropes in time for the baby.

I’m on call for jury duty this week because I was a dufus and didn’t call during vacation. Luckily though I didn’t have to go today and I don’t have to go tomorrow. Who knows, maybe I’ll luck out and not have to go all week!

Not everyone agrees on this of course. But to me, breastfeeding is a no-brainer. Let’s see. On the one hand you’d have to buy man made formula, put it into bottles, wash/sterilize the equipment, etc. On the other hand, the baby gets exactly what s/he needs from the moment of birth, complete with built-in immunity from mom’s antibodies. Breast milk never has to be purchased, is always the correct tempurature, and there’s nothing extra to pack into the diaper bag and take along. It is easily digested and it also promotes proper development of the baby’s jaws and dental arches (better chance for straight teeth)and causes mom to lose weight and get her flat tummy back sooner. Not to mention both baby and mom can fall asleep during feeding without any worry about choking. Baby needs mom/mom needs baby. A mutual admiration society. Anti-stress hormones are released. All very pleasant. . . once you get over the first 2 or three days of soreness for mom. Small price to pay.

Yeah, formula is also so freaking expensive along with all the other little things you need to go with the formula (liners, bottles nipples warmers washers… BAH!!!)

I’m hoping we’ll be fortunate enough to go the breastfeeding route. I do believe it’s what best suits especially during the critical first few months out!

Hey Angelo. Here’s to husbands who are supportive of breastfeeding! I think it has nothing to do with fortune and everything to do with the right information. Not to say no one ever encounters obstacles, but with the correct information they can definitely be overcome.

Glad you waited until after CES to decide… i’m currently leaning towards the HF10, I echo what you say about interlacing.

I’m still leaning towards SSD/HDD over tape. I’ve read a few complaints about the HV20 and the how it picks up the tape motor noise and many speculate the HV30 will do the same. I remember one of our family’s older VHS or Hi8 cams and how it’d pick up the motor and zoom, drove me nuts!

Unfortunately, it also seems that HDV is beginning to die out in the prosumer to consumer line cams (as evidenced by the newer CES HD cams) it’s too bad because the quality is so much better than AVCHD.

Yup, 25mbit bitrate can’t be beat. As for the motor noise, if you’re really concerned about audio you should be using an external mic no matter what.

My deal with the flash based systems is this. I can record to tape, and the minute I capture it, I now have it saved in two formats. I have a tape archive for the long haul, and I’ve now got my digital copy the same way that I would with the HF10 or HF100. So to me it makes more sense to have a tape AND digital copy, than simply a digital copy. People in the forums talk about easily shooting a terabyte of video during one summer. There’s just no way to use hard drives over the life of the camera if you’re going to do a lot of shooting.

As for HDV beginning to die out…I wouldn’t say that. AVCHD might be a newer standard, but if it produces worse quality at more conveinence, then I’m not sure that popularity of cams is a good way to base your decision. HDV is still easier to edit than AVCHD. The HF10 and HF100 will record a full 1920×1080 picture, but with only a 17mbps bit rate. The HG10 didn’ record at the full 1080i resolution, but with 15mbps, and the compression was still noticeable. I’m guessing the HF10 and HF100 will suffer from compression also until they bump the bitrate up into the 20′s. The AVCHD spec allows for it, but then the solid state drives would only hold a couple hours of video.

Definitely some pros and cons for both.

Using an external mic will produce the best audio, it’s just not convenient. I still think it’s sad they can still make a cam with an onboard mic that still has the SAME problems as 20+ years ago… Though, I’m hoping they fixed this issue with the HV30.

Storage is an issue for both. I’ve talked to many people who shoot video and leave tapes to stack on a shelf never doing anything with them. The other side is you end up with tons of *digital* data to do something with, burn or backup to hard drives. Tapes are cheaper and easier to store than drives.

HDV is not dead by any means, I think it will remain in the pro level equipment it’s just too good. We’ve seen in the past (BETAMAX, DAT…) the better (quality) technology doesn’t always win with the consumer.

For some reason, at least at the consumer to prosumer level, a huge majority of the newly announced HD cams are using AVCHD and either flash, HDD or DVD based. It would also lead me to believe that if they continue to produce the majority of cams like that the few HDV/Tape based units will be harder to find and have a tough time gaining popularity except amongst the few true prosumers.

With AVCHD i’m glad they’ve all bumped the max bitrate up, I’m also upset they are pusing the max bitrate up SLOWLY and haven’t at least added an option to hit max bitrate at 1280 x 720.

I’m guessing it has something to do with compression and allowable recording time. AVCHD at 17mbps I’m sure looks better than HDV at 17mbps. I’m sure they’d rather advertise an avchd cam that can do 15 hours of recording than an HDV cam that can do less than 10 hours. Think about it, if a mini-dv tape can hold 13 gigabytes of HDV, that would need a MASSIVE hard-drive inside these cams to achieve any decent amount of recording time. The marketing guys at these companies most certainly have influence.
