Beans and Wieners

“Tommy, it’s time to set the table!” Mom worked diligently over the stove cooking a familiar meal.

Tommy was four years old and had enough energy to blown down a house. Even when he was learning to walk his mother had commented that he went straight from crawling to running. He was always in motion, and channeling that energy was always a challenge. This meant that the rest of the family was usually involved in a Tommy activity like coloring, riding scooters, or hide and seek. Tommy was certainly a handful.
He was sort of an odd boy, and definitely not a kid you’d see in a Pampers commercial looking perfect and cute. That’s not to say he was a bad kid by any means, he was “unique.” He wore big glasses with a prescription that rivaled Grandma and Grandpa. The lenses made his eyes almost twice their normal size, which looked very out of proportion for his head. His hair was straight and blond, but he had a defiant cowlick that liked to stick up in the front. His hands were always dirty, and if Mom didn’t pay attention, sometimes he had the dreaded snot and dirt face. When you’re four you don’t bother with tissues, and you don’t wash your hands unless someone forces you. Smeared boogers on the face are gross enough, but when you mix in dirt it really brings out the texture, sort of like a work of art. Tommy was a budding booger artist.

Life in the Real World

Is everyone…

…good enough to be a professional baseball player?
…smart enough to be a rocket scientist?
…talented enough to be a famous painter?
…skilled enough to be a musician?
…kind enough to serve others?
…articulate enough to be a writer?
…strong enough to be a soldier?

If not, then why do we expect all students to be successful at school?

“A legislative committee has approved a bill that would make it illegal for people to use a hand-held telephone while riding a bicycle on a public road. Hands-free devices would be allowed and lawbreakers would face fines ranging from $100 to $250.”

HAHAHAH! Apparently they’ve had a large problem with bicyclists crashing while using their cell phone. This is just pathetic. How people can read about cases like this and still be pro big-government blows my mind. I say let people use their cell phones on a bike, and if they run into someone or get hurt, they can face the consequences.

What’s next, banning cell phones while walking?

The Blarg is Back!

Looks like there were some website problems for the last day or so, but all seems to be fixed. I’ve migrated to WordPress 2.1 with Andrew, but most of the changes are just things that will make my life easier.

My favorite improvement is the autosave feature. Now when I write a post it will automatically save it for me while I write it, like gmail does. The only major problem is that my picture posting plugin is now broken, so I’ll have to find an alternative. Until then don’t expect very many pictures. You can however expect a new story.

Shows Are Back!

Last night Prison Break and Heroes were fresh and exciting! Oh how I’ve missed that tag-team.

Prison Break is still very interesting despite being out of the slammer (though some people have found themselves going in). The larger conspiracy the show now revolves around is still good for some heart pounding moments, but it has become much more about the characters and personal vendettas than about the conspiracy. The conspiracy storyline took a well overdue advance yesterday, and I look forward to seeing how that unfolds.

Heroes continues to amaze me. I read an article in the paper about how the writers want something "big" to happen every episode, and boy have they come through. Each episode something major is revealed, whether it’s a new character, a new power, or a new breakthrough in the overarching story. It’s hard to not compare this to Lost, so I will. Lost seems like it has been spinning it’s wheels all season. If I recall there were some episodes where the only thing they showed was Kate and Sawyer sitting in their little cells. Heroes has been able to give the viewer a little something every episode to make you feel like things are progressing. When it feels like things are going nowhere (Lost) it tends to get really boring.

Are there any favorite shows that people are watching?

Good Market: Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Rich had gone to class the day after the incident groggy and half awake from the lack of sleep. His professor was droning on about foreign currencies and exchange rates, but all he could think about was the store.

“Maybe your secret has been discovered! You’ve not been watching like you should.” The Eyes had grown larger, or Rich had become smaller, he wasn’t sure. Whichever it was, they frightened him.
“It’s safe, I was careful,” he pushed back. It felt like the opposite of a tug war. Instead of being torn apart he was holding back an oncoming wave about to wash him away. Every time the Eyes spoke Rich had to push back harder. Their strength was growing.

Good Market: Chapter 2

Sorry for the delay, but hopefully it was worth the wait. The story has evolved into three parts, of which the following is the second (make sure you read part 1 first). Part three is done, but you will have to check back for the conclusion. I also see now that a story is continuosly evolving, and my posting of part 1 was premature (though a good jumping off point). After or with part three I will post the entire story, with an updated version of part 1. There’s a reason authors don’t publish the first chapter of a book before they’ve finished writing the rest of it, because changes are inevitable. I hope you enjoy.

Chapter 2

Rich Nguyen’s departure from the straight and narrow had been quick. The money had been a motivating factor, but there was something else that pushed him to that extreme. Rich felt emotions that he was neither comfortable nor familiar with that night the man in the suit asked for his help. He was not a killer, but something that night had changed him.

Spanking is the Devil

A crazy Democrat up in Sacramento is running wild! Sally Lieber wants to make it against the law to spank your child. Even a poll of people in the bay area think this is crazy! In case you don’t see the significance of a bill like this, think about the role the government is playing. A bunch of politicians in Sacramento are reaching out into your home and telling you how to parent. Luckily there are a few conservatives up there that understand this:

“Where do you stop?” asked Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine, who said he personally agrees children under 3 shouldn’t be spanked but has no desire to make it the law. “At what point are we going to say we should pass a bill that every parent has to read a minimum of 30 minutes every night to their child? This is right along those same lines.”

I’m very puzzled by this. First liberals excuse people for being crappy parents by giving their kids free lunch and after school programs. But now they’re telling people how they should be parenting?
