It seems that people are already preparing for elections that are almost two years away. An interesting Washinton Times article points out some of the hypocrisy shown by certain politicians as they shift their opinion on Iraq like the wind. The foolishness is shocking.

Chapter 4: Nice Guy, No Hope

The installments to this story are coming fast and furious now. Thank you for the words of encouragement. Hopefully you enjoy reading these as much as I am enjoying writing them.

In case you’re wondering, this story will take about 10 chapters in total. I haven’t decided on a very good way to lay these posts out, but I might make a link on the right that contains all the chapters on a single page. Until then you can just read them here, or if you’re new, scroll back a few days to the first post and start from there.

Chapter 4

By the next day Mike Donovan had become a small-time celebrity at McNeil. Apparently when you save a girl’s life word spreads like wildfire. People Mike didn’t even know were approaching him and complimenting him on a job well done. Mike welcomed the kind words, but he didn’t consider his actions extraordinary. He was just an average guy put into an extraordinary situation, and other people would have done the same thing in his place.

Chapter 3
Mike plopped into his seat in photo 1. It was the beginning photo class, and Mike was taking it as an elective his senior year. He didn’t want to be a photographer, but it beat writing poetry or singing in musical theatre.
For the last couple days since Adam had brought it up, all Mike could think about was Homecoming. Adam had planted a seed and put crazy ideas about taking Monica Callaway into Mike’s head. His morning ritual of “delaying” his departure for school was even more intense than it used to be. She was no longer the hot girl that was totally out of reach. Now she was the hot girl that was totally out of reach but would look smokin’ in a Homecoming dress.
Photo class was especially torturous. Monica was oblivious to Mike, even though they sat only a few chairs away from each other. This normally would have been a major turn off to Mike. Girls that are full of themselves, regardless of how hot they are, are a waste of time. Mike knew Monica was different though, and he blamed himself for never even attempting a conversation.

Chapter 2
“Don’t forget, your final essay on Macbeth is due tomorrow,” Mrs. Hale hollered after her 4th period class. The bell had rung, and although they were still physically in her classroom, her seniors had already moved on to lunch.
Mike walked out to the quad clutching the draft of his Macbeth essay.
“Lined paper, and especially that which pertains to all things educational, is strictly forbidden at lunch time!”
Mike looked up and saw Adam Magana standing on their table. “It’s senior year man, put that crap away,” Adam quipped.
Adam and Mike had been good friends for years, but hard work and school were two things that Adam hated. He wasn’t a loser, but he still thought C’s were good enough, and B’s and A’s meant you were trying too hard.
Mike was frustrated, and unlike Adam he actually cared about his grades. “Mrs. Hale thinks I’m interpreting the symbols too literally. I don’t understand what the point of writing something is if nobody can understand it.”
“Right,” Adam replied. “I have no idea what you just said.”

Back before Christmas I decided to buy some Nintendo stock. I had $500 sitting in a retirement account that was not invested, so I bought as many shares of Nintendo stock as I could. I didn’t buy enough.

Since then Nintendo stock has gone up 25%! In terms of investing those numbers are unheard of. Even on my measly $500 investment I’ve made over $100 even after the commission.

Of course hindsight is always 20/20, but have you bought your Nintendo stock yet?

It could be a bacteria. I’m not a doctor. It sucks being sick.

Saturday night we went out with Andrew and Sarah to dinner and a movie. We went to Alcatraz Brewing Co. at the Block and had some good beer and nachos. Afterwards Stacie and I went to see Freedom Writers for free (special teacher promotion). That night I woke up with a sore throat. Dang it!

I loaded up with vitamin C and Airborne Sunday morning, but it didn’t help. Sunday we went to Disneyland with Kurtis and Amanda, followed by lunch at Ruby’s. Overall it was a nice weekend.

Today I’m at a workshop learning lots of boring stuff, but it’s a good break from kids. Now that I’m sick it’s an even better arangement. This week is also shortened by finals, so that means minimum day Thursday, and no students Friday.

Ok, the lady is talking again, gotta go.

Chapter 1: Nice Guy, No Hope

My first story totalled 2700 words, the last one was 2000, and I’m hoping this one pushes closer to 10,000. I’ve outlined where I want the story to go, and I’ll be posting it in chapters. Hopefully they’re of similar length and only take a few minutes to read. This should allow me to work on it in short spurts and have new chapters up pretty quickly.

Ultimately I think it would be fun to write an entire novel, but short stories that I can post on here for fun are a good way to start. To try and write an entire novel right now would be like Michaelangelo starting with the Sistine Chapel.

Nice Guy, No Hope is a High School love story. I’m reaching back into the past, and I think there will be a lot of guys that can relate. Hope you enjoy.

Nice Guy, No Hope

Chapter 1

The air inside Mike Donovan’s 1996 Honda Civic was freezing. He had an extra jacket on over his sweatshirt, and he could see his breath when he exhaled. He rubbed his morning eye boogers away and yawned. Mike badly wanted to turn the car on and defrost his limbs, but he knew that was out of the question. It would have looked a little obvious if his car was running but not going anywhere, and he preferred to stay unnoticed. He sat there and rubbed his hands together hoping not to freeze, and waited.

Mountain Dew VS Dr Pepper

This is a battle that my taste buds have been waging for the last several years. In High School I would have been proud to pronounce Dr Pepper as my favorite soda, but now the decision is not so simple.

Starting in college my affection for Mountain Dew began to grow. Cal State Los Angeles was a Pepsi supplied school, so there was no Dr Pepper to be found. Contrary to popular belief, Dr Pepper is not owned by Coca-Cola, but instead by Cadbury Schweppes. It is sometimes bottled by Coca-Cola, but they do not own the trademark. Thus, Mr. Pibb. This left only Pepsi products for this sleepy college student to drink.

Classes at 8 am were the norm for my first two years of college. Staying up late also became the norm, so a caffeinated beverage became necessary to stay awake in those boring business classes. Mountain Dew and I became friends, and a 20 oz. bottle allowed me to stay attentive. This marked the beginning of my love for Mountain Dew.

Over the years my favorite soda has been in a state of flux. When Mountain Dew came out with Code Red and Livewire it gave my Mountain Dew love more variety. The Dr Pepper variations on the other hand have been ho hum. I did enjoy Dr Pepper Red Fusion and Sobe’s Mr. Green, but both only lasted a year or two.

What I drink now usually depends on what varieties a restaurant carries. Lately though, when given the choice, I almost always pick Mountain Dew over Dr Pepper.
