It’s Sunday and I’m on a religion roll! Thanks to wikipedia I’ve been doing lots of reading, and while I’m far from an expert on any of what I’m about to comment on, there are a few things I’ve found interesting. I look forward to whatever discussion may follow (especially from you Denise).
Over the last couple years I’ve grappled with my beliefs about baptism, and what "right" baptism entails. I’m still not entirely sure, but today I found some verses that I think stir the pot. As I was looking up baptism on wikipedia I found many beliefs from all sorts of people (Catholics, Church of Christ, Baptist, etc), but an interesting one I’d never heard of was that of Dispensationalism. Before I go on, let me make clear I know very little about them, and I do not claim to be one. From what I read though I did find some interesting verses on baptism though that I think are worth posting about.
I’ve been told that not only is baptism needed for salvation, but it also needs to be done one way: by immersion. Now growing up in a church full of people that can all think for themselves, I understand that is not the belief held by all, or even explicitly taught by the church. This is however the belief that has been explicitly stated to me by church leaders.
So to get to the meat of this post, is baptism even necessary? Even more specifically, what kind of baptism is necessary? Growing up I was taught that baptism is when you got dunked under water, and it was to publicly show that you had accepted Christ (a far cry from the necessity for salvation idea, but I’m over it). But now I’ve come across a group of people that believe in baptism, but it has nothing to do with water. Say what? Specifically I am talking about Acts 1:5. It says "For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." An interesting verse that appears to speak of two distinctly different baptisms, one by water, and one by the Holy Spirit. Now I’m usually very cautious of looking at a specific bible verse because it can usually be twisted a million different ways for whatever a person wants it to say. This verse however seems pretty clear cut that there is baptism by water, and baptism by the Holy Spirit. To be very focused, does this draw into question the idea that baptism by immersion is necessary for salvation? I know there are verses that say we are saved by baptism, but does that mean physical immersion or baptism by the Holy Spirit?
Could baptism by water be completely unnecessary? Are dispensationalists evil? Does our church put emphasis on water baptism when it should be placed on Holy Spirit baptism? I look forward to replies from those much more intelligent than myself.
