Peace Through Strength

Qui desiderat pacem, preparet bellum.
Vegetius, a celebrated military writer of the 4th century wrote these words, and translated, they mean “Who desires peace should prepare for war.”

In pace, ut sapiens, aptarit idonea bello.
This is a very similar sentiment written by Horace, the Roman poet, that translates to, “In peace, as a wise man, he should make suitable preparation for war.”

To be prepared for War is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.
You may be more familiar with the author of these words… President George Washington in his first annual address to Congress.

However, the phrase “peace through strength” became more famous through the words of President Ronald Reagan, “If we have learned anything these last eight years, it’s that peace through strength works.” The strategy ended the Cold War, and any real threat that Communism posed to America.

“Peace through strength” is still working today. Saddam Hussein’s murderous regime doubted our resolve, and much of the regime is now gone and the rest in hiding because of that mistake. And now this… Syria and North Korea want to talk.

Before the war with Iraq, North Korea decided to restart it’s nuclear program, and talk tough to the United States. They demanded one-on-one talks with the United States before they would consider shutting their nuclear program down. Presumably, they hoped to get some concessions, perhaps monetary concessions, from the U.S. President Bush, Colin Powell and Condeleeza Rice said no. If North Korea wanted to talk, it would have to be multilaterally.

The left cried, “Why won’t you talk with North Korea… why are you provoking North Korea… why are you ignoring North Korea?” I hope the left took notice to the shift in policy by the country’s leaders. Next week, North Korea, China and the United States sit down to multilateral talks.

At the same time, Syria has indicated it will begin expelling key Iraqi leaders who fled there during the final days of fighting. Syria’s president will also soon welcome Secretary of State Colin Powell to discuss terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Hmmm… I wonder what lead to Syria’s new openness?

We are in the middle of a war, a new kind of war. It’s a war in which the enemy isn’t always known or always clear. What we do know is that they are terrorists. And they are terrorists who survive thanks to friendly governments and regimes like the Taliban and Saddam Hussein’s. As we continue to cut the heads off these snakes, more and more world leaders will see that sponsoring terrorism is a death sentence.

Peace through strength. It’s worked before and it’s working again.
