Canada and Oil

I bet you thought this post would be about the great industrial complex and oil and how it runs our lives and how we can’t live without oil and President Bush is evil. But you’re wrong, it’s not.

A buddy at work and myself bought tickets to Sunday night’s World Baseball Classic game at Angel Stadium. This was at about noon today when we thought the USA team would win their pool and play Korea in the 2nd round. Unfortunately about 4 hours later the USA team lost to Canada. Now our chances of seeing the USA team beat on Hee-Seop Choi seem much less likely. Canada has to lose to Mexico, the USA has to beat South Africa, and then it comes down to runs allowed or something. Luckily Canada let South Africa score a bunch of runs, so if they do end up with the same record as the USA, we should have the edge. On Thursday I will be rooting for Mexico.

That was the Canada part…but you’re still thinking "what about the oil?" When I got home from work there was a small amount of steam emanating from beneath the hood. While I thought "crap, not good" I opened the hood to take a look. The radiator took a lot of water, and the dipstick read "zilch." I then went and bought a big 12 case of 10w-30, of which my car drank 5 quarts. Is that normal? 5 quarts? I bet I could put another one in, but I was starting to wonder…can you put in too much oil? All you oil experts, please lend me your advice.

Hopefully my car doesn’t blow up tomorrow.

Yes you can put too much oil. It’s almost as bad as having too little oil (hard to believe I know). The only way to know how much to put in is to know the amount of oil your engine can hold plus filter size (usually indicated in the manual). You under fill a bit and check the dipstick to see how much more you need to add. However if your car took 5 Quarts that sound REALLY bad… either you haven’t changed your oil in years (probably not true) and your car (it’s a bit older right?) is burning a normal amount of oil… or you have have a sizeable leak and or your car is burning too much oil (probably true). Check for oil spots where you normally park and then lift up that car and get under it to see if you see spots where it looks like oil is caked up quite a bit (usually near user replacable parts: check the oil pan bolt to see if it’s tight, and filter too), your gasket could be cracked and needs to be replaced or otherwise you have something else (metallic) cracked and that can be not fun and super expensive.

Took it to Jiffylube not too long ago…was due for service in January I think. Did a little looking online and 5 quarts was about the typical amount for most cars. I park in the garage every night, and not a drop of oil in there. I did notice that the last couple days the engine sounded a little funny after getting turned off. It’s got 125k miles on it, so it could be burning some oil. So we’ll see.

I thought for sure Utley put us ahead when he cracked that ball… but he put it in the deepest part of the park. Best game of the day was Cuba-Panama… I didn’t realize they hate each other. 6 hit batters and into extra innings

But I think even if Mexico wins, then Canada will be 2-1 (like hopefully we will). I saw tie-breaker rules, and the first one is that head to head meetings are most important. Canada beat us head to head, so I think we’d still only have a chance at runner-up. Either way we get to see Hee-Seop, haha.

Oh, and I drove to work and my car didn’t explode…yet.

I had a similar problem in my dakota. Taking long drawn out turns, like a 270 degree offramp, my Check Engine light would come on then turn off when I started driving straight. After one or two times I started getting a little worried. I am a terrible maintainer of my truck so it had been like 15,000 miles since my last oil change. My dipstick barely registered any oil. I immediately poured 3 quarts in and its been working like a dream ever since. My laziness has convinced me I saved myself a oil change.

In my old ranger it use to burn enough oil that every couple months it would need a quart of oil. At that rate I would have never needed an oil change if it wasn’t for the pesky filter.

I had a ranger that did the same thing. I am extremely anti-Ford. I take that back, I don’t like people who use “anti” to describe themselves in any way. What I meant to say is that I am pro-anything-but-Ford-and-Dodge.

well done, denise…i was thinking as i read the above comments that i needed to let everyone know that my dad changes the oil in my jeep…and he adds transmission fluid so that my car won’t stall anymore as i’m turning left into oncoming traffic. i have a good dad. and baseball IS hard! GO DUCKS

for the record, dad stood staring at the running engine in the Jeep for half an hour before I came out and told him it needed transmission fluid.
