Oil Companies are the Devil!

I was listening to Larry Elder this afternoon and he was playing clips from this senate hearing (following statistics and info courtesy of Larry). Oil execs are being questioned about oil profits among other things. The best part was when some lady was asking about how much money the execs make saying "Your salary is 1.5 million, you received 4 million in bonuses, and 10 million in stock options." I wanted to punch the lady. Why doesn’t she go question Barry Bonds for making a lot of money to hit a baseball? The oil industry is PRIVATE BUSINESS, leave them alone. The sad part is that the most of the country believes the lies that oil companies fix prices and that THEY are the devil. Wanna hear an interesting statistic? Over the last 30 years oil companies have made about $600 billion in revenues (pre-tax). During the same time the government has made $1.3 trillion in taxes on gasoline. Please tell me again, who exactly is profiting?

Even though I’d like to pull the earring out of Barry Bonds ear he deserves every penny he gets. Why. He has a specialized talent that people enjoy watching. He and a few other people have a talent that few others do. So in return he gets paid a ridiculous amount of money to play a kids game. So my question why can’t a woman question a PRIVATELY OWNED BUSINESS about salaries. It’s obviously effecting her so she questions it. I work for a privately owned company and if I were a costumer to my company and felt I was getting the short end of the stick I would question it. Large company or small I think it’s our right to question things…either way I like your stat on how much the government makes in gas taxes. I need a new job.

If you were a company and you felt you were getting the short end of the stick, you’d go somewhere else! That’s the beauty of free enterprise. When it comes to gasoline, you don’t have to buy it. You can move closer to work, you can buy a fuel efficient car, you can ride a bike, you can take public transportation, you can carpool. No one is forced to buy gasoline.

So when the government decides they don’t like gas prices (because heck, most of it is taxes and they’d never admit that) they think they can go question private business about it? “You make a lot of money, and that bothers me.” You know what happens when people make a lot of money? Other people want to get in on it, and competition begins. Know what happens when competition starts? Better choices and prices for consumers.

All thats fine and dandy but how many people do you honestly know that change something cause they don’t like it? Honestly. People will go out to dinner and have a bad experience and walk out saying “I’ll never eat there again” only to be back a week later. And the same goes for gasoline. Who do you know, and maybe you do, that actually ride their bike to work or move closer to work or buy a fuel efficient car to save some money on gas. I’m sure your list is short when you write it. Especially living in California when everyone gets a car the day they turn 16 and are driving one until theyre blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other. I totally agree with you that the government doesn’t like when somebody is making money and will stick their nose into it. Government hates competition. In my opinion the beauty is being able to question it. THAT’s the beauty of living here. Although I think our rights are slowly fading…but that’s a whole other box of worms.
